Burst Fracture Compression Fracture L1

Scared is about the only word I can use to describe how I feel. "Mortal" has crossed the my mind a few times in the past few days. Thursday I landed hard on my right side while out snowboarding at Grand Targhee. Last run of the day I hit the last jump in the terrain park with a bit to much speed and landed with a solid thud and compressed a vertebrae in my lower back. The bone burst and sent a few pieces of debris into my spinal cord column but nothing that my doctor is worried about.
I am wearing a pretty serious brace for the next 12 weeks 24/7. I am stable and Tuesday we will do a few more x-rays to make sure we are on track. Surgery in my case is a last resort. They would come through the front and remove the vertebrae and fuse a chunk of bone in the place where it was. Sounds pretty ugly so we are going a different route that has better results.

You might be doing all of your training in doors now but as long as you don't start some racing league that is done on the trainers we can go up the road together. YOU WILL BE FINE YOUR AN ANIMAL

Sucks dude. I have/had a burst fracture of my L2 with bone fragrements in my spinal cord. I rolled my fourwheeler four weeks ago. Get a second opinion if you can. My first doctor wanted emergency surgery through my stomach and back. My second opinion doctor completed the surgery only through my back. After five hours in surgery, 6 screws, 2 rods, a bone graph, 2 laminectomies and 3 days in intensive care I'm alive. 3 1/2 weeks after surgery and I can walk unassisted. My surgeon rocks. I'm lucky to be alive!! Hang in there!! Some chicks say scars are sexy. Lord knows I have a few now.

Wow that is pretty bad. But sure you will be fine. I fractured my L2 while on a tube being dragged by a speed boat. I had to lie on my back and not move for 2 months while in hospital. I then wore a back brace for 1 month. Im home now but so scared to do anything. I still cant do much. I go back to my doctors in 3 months with new xrays to check on the healing. Could i please ask which doctor you guys went to. Good luck.

Hey Sam, Time does heal, I fractured L1 & L2 in a horse riding accident - I spent 4 months lying flat on my back in hospital -begged them not to operate - thankfully they agreed!!! In hind sight opting for coservative treatment was the best decision I could have made!!! 20 years on I am fine - still walking and playing some (not too dangerous) sports. No skiing or horse-riding tho'
Take care

I burst my L1 due to an atv accident. Rolled the son of a gun right on top of me. I had surgery in University of Kentucky Med Center. I was walking un assisted after 5 days after surgery. I suggest an in house re-hab since a person is down so long after surgery. 11 Days after surgery I am already driving by myself. I feel like a complete miacle. I suggest the Blue Surgery Team @ University of Kentucky. I owe god and them thanks for my miracle.

Hey, I have no Idea who you are, but I was searching around for a picture of where my L-1 is exactly because I am getting a tattoo to on top of the one that I blew out on August 28th, I had it completely replaced, anyway, I know it helped me talking to others who had broken their back, so feel free to e-mail me

Dear Sam,

I fractured my L1 and L2 falling from a 3 story apartment window onto concrete July 2007. The doctor's that saw me felt I was lucky to not be much worse off, and I thank God that was all I got. For 3-4 months after it happened I couldn't lift, drag, push, pull much of anything. It's now 7 months post-fall, and I've just recently started working out again and I'm amazed at what I can do. I was so afraid to try crunches, twists and everything but humans really are quick recoverers so don't be afraid to let yourself get better and push yourself (not too hard) rather than pity yourself. Of course don't do anything that the doctor tells you not to, but I feel better and better every day and you will too.

God bless

I fractured my L-1 new years eve (last ride of 2009 on my reining mare). She went one way and I the other.

It was 2 weeks thursday-still wearing back brace-walking ok-most pain is in my sides, not back.

Will this heal all the way and can I ride horse again? I'm 50 and have never had a backache till now.

Hi there broken back folks!

It's been 4-1/2 months since the L1 fracture and I think I'm good as new-other than to shed about 30lbs.

Anyone got any advice on that? I've been working like a banshi (sp?)at the gym and watching what I eat.

Could being over 50 have anything to to with it?

Glad everyone is recovering--take care-

I was driving my mini cooper and got hit head on by an SUV. I have L1-burst fracture, broken pelvis with a rod, broken leg with a rod and a reconstructed ankle 12 screws and heel with 8 screws, broken sacrum and punctured lung. Its been 3 months now and told my back is worse. Hoping not to need surgery since I am so bored now. Cant wait to get out of wheelchair. Most of my pain is in my back and my foot with the 12 screws Iis numb and feels like its on fire. At 56 I hope my bones heal quickly and feeliing comes back.
